Education

Like all lecturers employed in universities I consider teaching students and young researchers to be one of my fundamental tasks. I have been also involved in continuous teaching of post-graduates and in conducting advanced courses for the latter improving their qualifications in specific areas.

From the very beginning of my work at TUL I have had close contacts with undergraduate and Ph.D. students. For more than 20 years I have supervised students who graduated in technical biochemistry. I was strongly involved in the establishment of the program of this major and currently I have conducted lectures in enzyme technology, seminar in biotechnology and seminar for MSc. students. I supervised several dozen MSc. theses. As a member of a faculty program commission I participated in improvement of teaching programs at the Faculty of Food Chemistry and Biotechnology. This work resulted in the development of a 2-step type of studies and adding to the overall program also some elective courses for students. Another success was the development of Ph.D. studies at the Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Sciences in 1994. I was also a visiting professor in Spain, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Austria and France.

As a member of the Working Group for Applied Biocatalysis of the European Federation for Biotechnology (EFB) I participated in devising teaching courses programs. I also wrote chapters entitled „Biocatalyst Production” and „Downstream Processing” for the text book „Applied Biocatalysis” and took part in organization of teaching courses entitled „Advanced Course on Applied Biocatalysis”. The latter were held at Murcia University in Spain (in 1991), TUL (in 1994) and Agricultural Academy in Budapest (in 1996). I was one of coordinators of TEMPUS S_JEP 09917-95 project „Methods of measurement and Quality Control in Biotechnology” involving Agricultural Academies in Poznan and Cracow and TUL. I supervised work on Immunochemistry, Separation Techniques, Sensors and Biosensors, and Fast Microbiological Methods and Genetic Probes within the scope of this project. Owing to participation in this project, 10 researchers from the Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Sciences of TUL completed short-time research training courses abroad (Institute Pasteur, Institute of Food Research, Norwich, Reading, University of Luton, Fachhochschule in Lemgo) where they learnt modern analytical techniques applicable to biotechnology and food industry. This resulted in implementation of new teaching courses for undergraduate students, like fundamentals of immunochemistry, and in organization of advanced courses in modern analytical techniques for MSc. graduates employed in industry, mainly in food processing.
